Like others of you they remind me of my grandmother who always had them in her windows. I grow them in plastic pots inside a decorative pot because I tend to routinely forget to water and they don't dry out as fast in the plastic pots. Sometimes, though, I think I should switch to the clay pots as they are so attractive in their matching saucers. I grow my AFs under lights because I don't have enough window space facing the right directions. Also, there are cats living in my house and they tend to molest the AF plants, knocking off the fragile leaves and pawing in the dirt. AFs are without a doubt my very favorite houseplant to grow. The variety of bloom colors and configurations is enormous and fascinating to me. If you haven't tried growing them I highly recommend you buy a healthy-looking plant at your local garden shop or even the grocery store if you have one that carries plants. Follow Pam's advice and you'll be rewarded with beautiful, long-lasting blooms.

Where do they grow wild? (Michelle) Are you in Africa, by any chance?

But, I'm off to get a cute new pot - my plastic pot doesn't look good and now you have motivated me to find something much cuter!

They grow wild here, mostly on rocky outcrops and shady forest floors. Sadly their numbers in the wild are dwindling with deforestation. Thanks for all the great tips for growing them indoors Pam. Very useful

My grandmother was a fanatic when it came to African Violets, even won awards. Wish I had her green thumb but your information will definitely help.
